US Mint Out Of Silver Coins - Suspends Sales
Tyler Durden's picture
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 01/17/2013 18:40 -0500

As we noted earlier this month, the demand for both gold and silver 'physical' coins has been record-breaking as 2013 began. So much so, that now after selling over 6 million silver coins in 2013 so far, the US Mint has run out of silver eagles and has suspended sales. Furthermore, the Mint is saying that it will not restart sales until January 28th! With all asunder proclaiming victory and crisis averted based on the nominal price of stocks at five-year highs, Swiss interest rates no longer negative, and Spanish bond yields at 5%, it seems there are still a few that demand the wealth-preserving safe-haven of hard assets as the escalation of the currency wars shows no sign of abating.

Quote:
Authorized Purchasers,

The United States Mint has temporarily sold out of 2013 American Eagle Silver Bullion coins. As a result, sales are suspended until we can build up an inventory of these coins. Sales will resume on or about the week of January 28, 2013, via the allocation process.

Please feel free to call us if you have any questions.

Regards,

Jack A. Szczerban

Branch Chief, Precious Metals Group

Department of the Treasury

Silver Is Outshining Gold by a 2-to-1 Margin: Lydon
By Matt Nesto

Gold may have more prestige and a broader fan base, but experts say, silver is where the real action is right now. In the past 3 months alone, the price of silver has risen 25%, while gold's recent run up, albeit impressive, has only been about half as strong.

Still, whether it's gold or silver or platinum or palladium you are chasing, the penchant for precious metals has been reignited by the dovish central bank action commonly called QE3. But Tom Lydon, the editor of ETF Trends, says when it comes to silver, there's more to this hard asset story than monetary policy, inflation concerns and fear.

"There's been a huge increase in emerging market demand as more people move up to the middle class, and silver is an easier acquisition for them," Lydon says in the attached video. "Although somewhat of a speculative investment ten years ago, gold and silver are now becoming a foundation investment." He says the average investor no longer just puts 60% in stocks and 40% bonds anymore.

Naturally, some pros have doubts that the current run can last, or at least will run out of steam. While there is really no way to tell what the future holds, metals traders and analysts do say that silver tends to outperform in a bull market, underperform in a bear markets, but overshoot in either directions.

While silver is unarguably more volatile, Lydon points out that it is still almost 40% below its highs of two years ago, while gold is just 15% beneath its $2,000 peak a year ago.

Ease of access via ETFs is another reason why metals are gaining market share in portfolios Lydon says, calling the precious metal investing process ''much more free flowing." While he says the largest silver fund is the iShares Silver Trust (SLV), the ETFS Physical Silver (SIVR) and the Powershares DB Silver (DBS) are also very widely held and actively traded.

In addition, just like their brethren in the gold patch, Lydon says some investors prefer to own the metal producers instead of the metal itself and do so via mining ETFs such as the Global X Silver Miners (SIL) or the iShares Global Silver Miners (SLVP). But no matter what route feels right, Lydon says to would-be investors, "it's exciting, but you've got to do your homework."

SLV .
*SLV , 1x a favor.
*AGQ, 2x a favor.
*ZSL , 2x en contra.
*DSLV , 3x en contra.

What Are The Most Popular Silver Bullion Coins?
Posted on June 6, 2012 by Andy Hagans

Image

When a precious metals investor decides to “get physical”, he often begins with a silver purchase, even before getting to gold. The low price of entry (relative to other precious metals) makes a physical investment in silver possible even with a very small amount of capital. And with a first investment in physical silver, a popular choice is, of course, the silver bullion coin. But which silver coin is the most popular?

If you answered my question with “the American Silver Eagle!”, I won’t argue with you. The ASE enjoys wide popularity, accessibility and market liquidity. But there are other options, too–a plethora of them, in fact [See: 25 Ways to Invest in Silver.] We’ll consider just the silver bullion coin market, for now, though.

While the physical silver market goes far beyond APMEX, both domestically and especially internationally, the buying habits of the (large) APMEX client base could be considered as a decent proxy for the overall retail market. The APMEX Top 40 Best Sellers page lists several silver coins and rounds, along with gold, palladium and platinum products. Disregarding fractionals, the silver coins and rounds were listed in the following order, as of 5/25/2012:

APMEX Silver Round (Legally, issues by private minters are not considered “coins” at all and must be referred to as “rounds”.)
Silver American Eagle
Silver Canadian Maple Leaf
Silver Mexican Libertad
Morgan / Peace Silver Dollar

The first coin (sorry, ’round’!) on the list may have surprised you. While many investors prefer to limit their coin purchases to legal tender issues (for valid reasons), APMEX has a large footprint in the retail market and thus its coins enjoy relatively good liquidity. Additionally, the APMEX Silver Round’s premium over the spot price is low, relative to that of the other silver bullion coins on the APMEX list. So if you’re a stacker trying to maximize the height and weight of your stack, the APMEX Silver Round may be the way to go.

Other, more conservative investors–such as myself–may prefer to stick mainly to the legal tender silver bullion coins, due to the stable premium and deep liquidity they enjoy. As the phrase goes, “Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM,” and in the physical silver market, the same could probably be said about the Silver American Eagle and the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf.

The low price per ounce for silver, relative to gold, does however allow it to be more easily “collected” in a multiple of issues in coin form. The pricing also makes diversification among bullion issues possible even with a small amount of capital. So if you’d like to diversify beyond the ASE, no one will blame you. As for me, as I said last week: I like bears. So give me a Silver Chinese Panda. And while we’re at it, a stack of ASE’s!
